Why Is Molecular Sieve The Best Adsorbent For Oxygen Generation?

Molecular sieves can separate nitrogen and oxygen in the air through pressure swing adsorption technology. It is this property that makes it an ideal adsorbent for oxygen generators.

Most industrial or household oxygen concentrators use the principle of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) or vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) to separate high-purity medical grade oxygen from the air.
This is achieved by sweeping a flow of air over a molecular sieve bed within the oxygen concentrato/generator. As the air pressure in the concentrator swings, nitrogen is adsorbed by molecular sieve pore, so that high-purity oxygen enters the flow-channel. Finally, purified oxygen (93% ± 3%) is passed through for enhanced oxidative reaction or patient oxygenation and other conditions.
The high adsorption performance and regenerable effect of molecular sieves also make oxygen production long-lasting. When the oxygen concentrator is running, it uses the left side molecular sieve A column to concentrate the oxygen, and then sends some purified oxygen to the right side molecular sieve B column to adsorb the remaining nitrogen molecules. Once the molecular sieve bed in column A is saturated, the oxygen generator sends air through column B to concentrate the oxygen, and also returns to column A to remove the adsorbed nitrogen from the molecular sieve bed. Doing so can effectively improve the adsorption efficiency and prolong the service life.

At present, moleuclar sieve 13x-hp is commonly used in the market for high-concentration oxygen production, which can reach more than 90% oxygen concentration. Although 5a, 13x can also be used for oxygen production, it is usually used in the field of industrial oxygen production, and the oxygen concentration cannot reach medical requirements.
Research conducted by super packing mall shows that the oxygen concentration of ion-exchanged lithium-based molecular sieves will be better than that of sodium-based 13x-hp 13x and 5a molecular sieves.
From a chemical perspective, when the Na+ cations in the sodium-based molecular sieve are replaced by Li+ cations, the zeolite has a stronger interaction with each nitrogen molecule passing through the sieve bed. This adsorption achieves high efficiency, high purity (93% ±3%) oxygen recovery at ambient temperature for oxygen concentrator using lithium-based molecular sieve bed.
