Molecular Sieve And Activated Alumina Is Used in Oxygen Generator

In modern pressure swing adsorption (PSA) oxygen generation technology, the combination of molecular sieve and activated alumina is crucial for ensuring the efficient and stable operation of the equipment. They have distinct functions and work synergistically to separate high-purity oxygen from the air.

Oxygen Molecular Sieve
Molecular sieves are synthetic zeolites with a uniform microporous crystal structure. Commonly used oxygen generation molecular sieves include 13X HP molecular sieve and lithium molecular sieve. They exhibit selective adsorption, preferentially adsorbing nitrogen, possessing excellent nitrogen-oxygen separation coefficients, and high adsorption capacity. They are mainly used in industrial, household, and medical oxygen generators.

Activated Alumina
Activated alumina is a porous, high-strength solid particle with a large specific surface area, abundant microporous structure, wear resistance, and long service life. It has a strong adsorption capacity for polar molecules. Activated alumina desiccant can deeply adsorb large amounts of water vapor in the raw air, protecting the subsequent molecular sieve, and can also adsorb some impurities such as carbon dioxide.

Working Principle

In the PSA oxygen generation process, air first passes through a pretreatment layer containing activated alumina. During this stage, moisture and most of the carbon dioxide in the air are strongly adsorbed and removed, producing dry, clean air.

Subsequently, the dry air enters the main separation layer containing zeolite molecular sieves. Under pressurized conditions, the zeolite molecular sieves selectively adsorb nitrogen molecules, while oxygen, due to its weak adsorption, is enriched and output as a high-purity product gas (typically 93%±3%). When the pressure decreases, the adsorbed nitrogen is released, the molecular sieve adsorbents are regenerated, and the cycle continues.

The close integration of molecular sieve desiccant and activated alumina ball perfectly illustrates the synergistic value of functional materials in engineering applications. One focuses on "purification," and the other on "separation," together forming the cornerstone of the efficient, energy-saving, and stable PSA oxygen generation technology, continuously delivering vital oxygen to the medical, industrial, and residential sectors.
